Description
This painting by Tathi Premchand reflects the tension and tragedy of the Kargil conflict between India and Pakistan. At the center, a missile marked with the colors of the Indian flag becomes a powerful symbol of war, nationalism, and military strength. The dark forms on either side suggest opposing forces locked in confrontation. The grid-like background creates a feeling of confinement, uncertainty, and surveillance. Below the missile, the image of a child reminds viewers of the innocent lives affected by war. The contrasting colors of black, red, green, and white heighten the emotional intensity of the composition. Rather than glorifying conflict, the artist draws attention to its human cost and lasting consequences. Created in 2001-3, the work serves as a reflection on division, sacrifice, and the desire for peace in South Asia. The Kargil War, also known as the Kargil conflict, was fought between India and Pakistan from May to July 1999 in the Kargil district of Ladakh, then part of the Indian-administered state of Jammu and Kashmir and along the Line of Control
