Description
Before Storytelling: Form in Relationship
Drawing Series, 2013
By Tathi Premchand
These drawings belong to an early phase of Tathi Premchand's artistic journey, created before narrative storytelling became central to her practice. Working with simple ink lines on graph paper, the artist explores the emotional and psychological space between male and female identities.
The figures appear symbolic rather than realistic, revealing human character through exaggerated forms, expressive faces, and spontaneous mark-making. Abstract gestures, fragmented shapes, and playful distortions create a visual language that balances humour, intimacy, and tension.
The works investigate themes of communication, companionship, desire, individuality, and social roles. Male and female forms emerge from a world of imagination where memory, observation, and emotion merge. The grid paper acts as a silent structure, while the free-flowing lines suggest movement, freedom, and personal expression.
These 2013 drawings are important as they document the artist's transition from intuitive mark-making toward the narrative and socially engaged themes that later became prominent in her work. Together, they form a poetic exploration of human relationships, capturing moments that exist between reality and imagination.
